I came out of retirement to do my job at the paper, it now seems I may never retire.
My real concerns though are manifold. We came to Australia precisely to get away from stuff like this. We came because we wanted to live in a country that cares about its citizens, not one that treats its people with disdain. That's what seems to be the case now. This photo of the recent eclipse is relevant. There are people whose needs are being eclipsed by this government.
I don't have the answers, but I do have compassion. What worries me most is that Australia is losing compassion. We can't be "The Lucky Country" and have no heart. Thatcher had no heart in my view, and men died in the miners' strike. Abbott needs to show he has compassion and humanity. If he doesn't, I fear for my country and future generations.
