I'd been offered a place at university in London, but I never went. I was having too much fun playing music. I'm not going to name names in this piece, because some of the people involved are still alive, and I'd be sued. This was a great job, money for old rope, really.
I didn't mind in the slightest. It was my only night off and I loved the company. Back then you could smoke in the bar, and no one asked your age.
The blokes used to buy about three pints when last orders were called, and there was no way they could drink them. When it was closing time, the bouncers didn't mess about, you were out. If you'd got leftover drinks it was tough.
It wasn't tough for me and Lance though. We'd hit the tables before the staff, and take full pint pots back to the dressing room. This was "minesweeping", and we loved it.
