I don’t think “declaring war” on our schools is going to do too much good.
I know one teacher is trying to tackle the issue with a particular pupil, but Mum and/or dad have to be involved too, and getting them all together to discuss the issue is no easy task.
Both of my parents were teachers, and I could read before I went to school. That’s not boasting; it’s a fact, and I was very lucky. My daughter could read before she went to school too, not because we made her, but because we couldn't stop her from carrying a book around everywhere she went from the age of 18 months. To me, reading is the key to everything.
