I also get asked lots of other questions. "How long have you been playing?" "Who was/is your biggest influence?" "How do you play without frets?" "Why has your bass got five strings?"
And the list goes on, and on. As a bass player first and foremost, I thought it would be an interesting topic to write about. It's a question I've never really given much thought to, I'm just a bass player. I didn't start that way, but I'm glad it worked out that way.
I'm still guilty of overplaying, it's a temptation I can't resist when I get the chance. And when I play in a duo or trio I play more because I'm trying to fill out the sound. Maybe that's a failing; I don't know.
If anyone wants advice (I do teach a little bit these days), download iGig Book or iReal Pro to your iPad. Play along with Chuck Rainey's Steely Dan parts. Try different inversions of chords and see what difference they make to the sound.
